Swaddle

SWADDLE (Old Eng., “to bandage,” “to swathe” for Heb. חָתַל, H3156, only in Ezekiel 16:4). Here the lack of “swaddling” is taken to be a sign of rejection. The noun appears in Job 38:9, in parallel with עָנָ֣ן, “cloud.” In the LXX of these two passages the Gr. σπάργανα is used. This term appears in Luke 2:7, 12, and may reflect the Ezekiel usage. KJV uses “swaddle” incorrectly in Lamentations 2:22 and Wisdom of Solomon 7:4 where the Heb. טָפַח֒, H3253, “to spread” and its Gr. equivalent appear.
