Steadfastness

STEADFASTNESS (ὗπομονή, endurance, patience, patient endurance, perseverance, steadfastness). It denotes patient endurance in the face of adverse circumstances. It suggests a willingness to endure because of a hope in something that has been promised. In the RSV the word is found in only three places (Rom 15:4, 5; 2 Thess 1:4; James 1:3, 4; KJV has PATIENCE in each instance), although the Gr. word hupomonē is found twenty-nine times in the NT. In the KJV STEADFASTNESS appears twice, once as the rendering of στερέωμα, G5106, (Col 2:5; RSV FIRMNESS), and once as the rendering of στερηγμός (2 Peter 3:17; RSV STABLILITY).
