Stature

STATURE, two Heb. and one Gr. word are so tr. by the Eng. VSS. 1. מִדָּה֒, H4500, which may be represented in the rare Gr. expression, μινδαλοεσσα (cf. Journal of Cuneiform Studies, 10, 132, 2) meaning “height” (Num 13:32, et al.). A variant appears in 2 Samuel 21:20, Heb. מָדִין, H4515, which is accompanied by a qere and kethib which emends the term to that of the parallel passage (1 Chron 20:6), middāh, so the text is then tr., “where there was a man of great stature.” The reading might be considered correct on the basis of another root, מָדﯴנ֒, H4506, “contentious” (Prov 6:14, et al.).

2. קﯴמָה, H7757, “height” (1 Sam 16:7, et al.).

3. ̓Ηλικία, “age,” “time of life,” and secondarily, “stature” (Luke 19:3), and possibly Matthew 6:27, as (RSV) “add a cubit to his span of life” (Luke 12:25). But this rendering seems far-fetched.
