SOSTRATUS sŏs’ trə təs (Σώστρατος; Σόστρατος). The governor of the citadel at Jerusalem under Antiochus IV (Epiphanes). He tried to obtain from the high priest, Menelaus, the sum of money which the latter had promised to pay the king to be appointed high priest, but Menelaus refused. As a result, both Menelaus and Sostratus were summoned to appear before the king. Beyond this story, Sostratus is not known (2 Macc 4:27ff.).
