SNUFF (נָפַח, H5870, [Mal 1:13], שָׁאַפ֒, H8634, [Jer 2:24; 14:6], meaning to breathe out explosively). The term is used in Malachi 1:13 for an act of derision toward God and His command for an unblemished sacrifice (RSV “sniff”). Jeremiah 2:24 describes the breathing of an animal in heat searching for a mate, while 14:6 describes that of an animal dying of thirst and starvation (RSV 2:24 “sniff,” 14:6 “pant”).
