Skirt

SKIRT appears only in the OT. It is the common tr. for three different Heb. terms. The most common is כָּנָף, H4053, whose primary meaning is “extremity,” “wing,” and by extension “skirt.” However, it is used often as a euphemism for immoral activity (Deut 22:30). Less common is שׁוּל, H8767, which was apparently a covering of the lower body, and its removal signified indignity (Jer 13:22). The term פֶּה, H7023, common to almost all Sem. languages, means “mouth,” “orifice,” but is used for collar in Job 30:18 and Psalm 133:2. KJV trs. SKIRT, whereas JPS, ASV, and RSV tr. or suggest COLLAR.
