Shimeon

SHIMEON shĭm’ ĭ ən (שִׁמְעֹֽון; LXX, Συμεών, G5208). One of the sons of Harim who took the pledge to put away his foreign wife. Upon his return to Jerusalem, Ezra was distressed over the state of affairs which had been created by foreign marriages. He charged the offenders with trespass and guilt and solicited their pledges to put away the foreign wives. Many of the offenders were Levites, others just “of Israel.” Shimeon belonged to the latter (Ezra 10:31).

Although the Heb. is the same, Shimeon is not to be identified with Simeon the son of Jacob and father of one of the tribes. 1 Esdras 9:32 calls him Simon Chosomaeus.
