SHEREBIAH sher’ ə bī’ ə (שֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֛ה; LXX Σαραβία, meaning uncertain; God has sent burning heat has been suggested). 1. A Levite who with his extended family, joined Ezra at a river encampment in Babylon, in preparation for journeying to Pal. (Ezra 8:18, 24; 1 Esd 8:47, 54). He was a “man of discretion” to whom was committed funds and vessels for the Temple (treasury) at Jerusalem. He assisted in Ezra’s public reading and exposition of the law (Neh 8:7, 8; 1 Esd 9:48), and shared in sealing the covenant (Neh 10:12), as one of the prominent leaders of the people.

2. A Levite, who returned from Babylonian exile in company with Zerubbabel and Jeshua (Neh 12:8). His name is listed in connection with those who were in charge of music, but he may be the same person who accompanied Ezra.
