Second Adam

SECOND ADAM (ὁ δεύτερος ̓Αδάμ). The title “Second Adam,” attributed to Christ, results from a conflation of “Last Adam” (ὁ ἔσλατος ̓Αδάμ) and “Second Man” (ὁ δεύτερος ἄνθρωπος) in 1 Corinthians 15:45-49, though the idea it incorporates is prominent in both 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 and Romans 5:12-21. In his counter to a static Platonic anthropology that taught a heavenly real man and earthly copies, Paul proclaimed a dynamic redemption for real men on earth and a fulfillment in history by the “spiritual” and “heavenly” man Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:45-49). In contradistinction to the First Man’s sin, which brought death and condemnation, the Second Man’s “act of righteousness” and “obedience” results in an “abundance of grace” bringing justification, righteousness, and eternal life (Rom 5:12-21).
