Sea Monster

SEA MONSTER (תַּנִּין, H9490; sea monster three times RSV and once KJV). See Dragon for discussion of Heb. תַּנִּין, H9490, esp. Genesis 1:21. The use is purely fig. in Job 7:12, “Am I...a sea monster” (whale KJV), and Psalm 148:7, “Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps” (dragon KJV). Such contexts provide no clues to help in identification. The sole KJV use of sea monster (Lam 4:3) is almost certainly incorrect and RSV is to be preferred: “Even the jackals give the breast and suckle their young.” If it were tr. whale, as in other passages, this could be lit. true, for the whale suckles its calf, but the background of the passage is desert rather than sea. It would suggest that תָּנִּים (jackal) is to be preferred to תַּנִּין, H9490, (dragon, etc.).
