SARDINE sär’ dēn, a translucent variety of very fine-grained silica (silicon dioxide) which is brown to orange-brown by reflected light but deep red by transmitted light and a semiprecious stone. The reference to “sardine” in Revelation 4:3 (KJV) is given as “sardius” in ASV; cornelian in NEB, and carnelian in RSV.
