Sailor

SAILOR (ναύτα, shipman, common sailor, Acts 27:30). In addition, there are a few references to a εὐθύνων, pilot or helmsman (Jas 3:4) and κυβερνήτης, G3237, master or captain (Acts 27:11). Israel, though landlocked, had some familiarity and contact with the sea. Solomon outfitted a fleet of ships for commercial purposes (1 Kings 9:26) and even though his effort was abortive, so did Jehoshaphat (1 Kings 22:49, 50). Some of Jesus’ disciples owned fishing smacks and plied the sailor’s trade (Matt 4:21; Luke 5:3). The most graphic maritime account in Scripture is the record of Paul’s voyage to Rome when the sailors conspired to desert the ship and were forcibly dissuaded by Paul and the centurion (Acts 27).
