Pull

PULL (to draw up, strip off). Many words in the Bible are tr. “pull.” Lot was dragged (בּﯴא, H995) into the house (Gen 19:10). God promised not to “tear down” (הָרַס, H2238), as a building, those described as the “good figs” (Jer 24:6). The psalmist asked God to pull (יָצָא, H3655) him out of the net (Ps 31:4). Impaling on a beam “pulled” (Aram. נְסַח, H10481) from one’s own house was threatened (Ezra 6:11). Part of Jeremiah’s commission was to “break down” (Jer 1:10 RSV), but “pull down” in KJV. In a parable of judgment (Ezek 17:9), the “uprooting” of a tree is described by נָתַק, H5998. Oppression is “stripping off” (פָּשַׁט, H7320) a robe in robbery (Mic 2:8). Jeroboam was unable to “pull” (שׁוּב֒, H8740) back his hand that was withered in judgment (1 Kings 13:4).

Jesus rebuked Pharisees by reminding them that they would “pull out” (ἀνασπάω, G413) an ox from a well on the Sabbath (Luke 14:5). Saving a person at the last moment is ἁρπάζω, G773, “snatch” (Jude 23). Removing a log from the eye is ἐκβάλλω, G1675, “cast out” (Matt 7:4). The fool’s barn was to be “pulled down” (καθαιρέω, G2747), and Paul was in danger of being “pulled apart” (διασπάω, G1400) before the council (Luke 12:18; Acts 23:10).
