PREVENT (קָדַם, H7709; προφθάνω, G4740; φθάνω, G5777). A word that occurs in the KJV in the now obsolete sense of “to come or go before,” “to anticipate,” not in the sense of “to hinder” (Ps 119:147; Matt 17:25; 1 Thess 4:15). The KJV uses “prevent” for “meet” (Pss 21:3; 59:10; Isa 21:14; Amos 9:10), “come to meet” (Job 30:27; Ps 79:8), “come before” (Ps 88:13), “come upon” (2 Sam 22:19), “confront” (2 Sam 22:6), “receive” (Job 3:12), “has given to” (Job 41:11). The context determines what meaning is most fitting.
