PLATE (צִיצ֒, H7488, blossom; פַּח֮, H7063, plate; and לוּחַ, H4283, tablet). The Heb. word צִיצ֒, H7488, is of doubtful meaning but given by Gesenius as “blossom.” It is connected with the idea of radiance. It describes a plate of gold on the front of the miter of the high priest (Exod 28:36; Lev 8:9). A plate of metal, particularly one that had been hammered thin, is the usual meaning of פַּח֮, H7063. Exodus 39:3 gives it as “leaf” (RSV). In Numbers 16:38 (Heb. text is 17:3) the censers were to be hammered into a covering for the altar. The Heb. לוּחַ, H4283, is used of the stone tables upon which the Ten Commandments were written (Exod 24:12; 31:18b). It also refers to the boards of the altar (27:8 RSV). Tyre is compared to a boat and the wood planking described as “boards” by this same word in Ezekiel 27:5 KJV. It also describes the metal plates in Solomon’s Temple (1 Kings 7:36).
