Plank

PLANK (עָב֒, H6264, עֵץ, H6770, צֵלָע֒, H7521, thick boards). “Plank” appears in the Eng. text of the KJV three times, and in each instance is a tr. of a different Heb. word. In Ezekiel 41:25 it is a tr. of עֵץ, H6770, which occurs hundreds of times but is usually rendered “trees” or “wood.” It ought to be given as “wood” here as well. The Heb. צֵלָע֒, H7521, means “rib” or “board” and is tr. as “plank” (KJV) in 1 Kings 6:15. Though the word is found more than forty times, only here does it bear this tr. The passage describes Solomon’s Temple, the inside floor of which was made of “planks of fir” (KJV) or “boards of cypress” (RSV). Gesenius believes that עָב֒, H6264, is a technical architectural term referring to a threshold forming an entrance to a colonnade or temple. It is found in Ezekiel 41:26 where KJV renders it “thick planks” and the RSV gives it as “vestibule.” Whether its proper meaning is “projecting roof” or “landing” is uncertain.
