PENDANT (נְטִפָה, H5755, earring [Isa 3:19]). The etymology of the Eng. “pendant” connects it with the idea of “hanging down.” The appropriateness of this rendering is evident since the Heb. root of the noun above means “to drop, to fall in drops,” and is occasionally employed to express poetic declarations (Job 29:22; Prov 5:3; Song of Solomon 4:11). Hanging earrings, esp. if made of pearls and thus shaped like drops, would be appropriately described by this word. Judges 8:26 RSV seems to distinguish נְטִפָה, H5755, from earrings, but נֶ֫זֶם, H5690, which is there rendered “earring,” could also mean “nosering,” or perhaps refer to a jewel worn hanging down from the forehead. The Heb. לַ֫חַשׁ, H4318, has also been tr. “earring” in Isaiah 3:20 KJV, but this is an unlikely rendering since it refers more prob. to an amulet or charm. The word “earring” in Numbers 31:50 and Ezekiel 16:12 is עָגִיל, H6316, and refers to a circular ornament.
