Peleg

PELEG pe’ lĕg (פֶּ֗לֶג, LXX Φάλεκ, G5744, division, channel). KJV NT PHALEC, fā’ lĕk. A descendant of the line of Shem, a son of Eber, and brother of Joktan (Gen 10:25; 11:16-19; Luke 3:35). In his days the earth was divided (Gen 10:25; 1 Chron 1:19). This prob. has reference to the dispersion of the peoples on the earth as related in the Tower of Babel story (Gen 11:1-9). There would thus be a word-play on Peleg, which itself means “division.” This would fit well the idea expressed that the whole population of the earth branched off from the three sons of Noah (Gen 9:19). Other theories also have been advanced. It has been suggested that there may be a connection with Phalga, a Mesopotamian town situated at the junction of the Chaboras with the Euphrates; that Peleg should be sought in al-Falj (on the road between Basra and Yemâma); or in el-Falaj in Yemâma. The noun peleg in Heb. means a water channel or canal, and Peleg may be the designation of a people who lived in some well-watered district such as Babylonia. The similarity to the Assyrian palgu (“canal”) would favor this view.
