Pedaiah

PEDAIAH pĭ dā’ yə (פְּדָיָ֥ה, seven occurrences, and פְּדָיָֽהוּ in 1 Chron 27:20; LXX MSS have variety of forms: Φαλαιά, Φαλαδαιά, etc., regarded as probable corruptions of Φαδαιά; the Lord has redeemed). This name has several occurrences in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah. All relate to comparatively inconspicuous characters. Pedaiah (Neh 3:25), the son of Parosh, helped to rebuild a portion of the city wall; a Pedaiah is mentioned (8:4) as one of those who stood beside Ezra at the reading of the law; a Levite named Pedaiah was one of the men appointed as treasurer over the storehouses (13:13). There is no way of knowing whether these three incidents refer to the same man or to more than one man of the same name. Other occurrences of the name are found only in genealogical lists or as a patronymic. “Joel the son of Pedaiah” was ruler of western Manasseh in David’s reign (1 Chron 27:20); a Pedaiah of Rumah was father of Zebidah, the mother of Jehoiakim (2 Kings 23:36). Another Pedaiah is mentioned as son of Jeconiah, and father of Zerubbabel (1 Chron 3:18, 19). The genealogy of Sallu, a Benjamite, includes a Pedaiah as one of his ancestors (Neh 11:7).
