OFFSCOURING (סְחִי, H6082, that which is scraped off; περίψημα, G4370, that which is wiped off all around).

This Eng. word occurs only two times in the KJV, RSV and ASV (Lam. 3:45; 1 Cor 4:13). In Eng., the word refers to something that is “scoured off,” i.e., rubbed off, often with a rough material so as to clean by friction. It can refer also fig. to the scum or castoffs of society. Both סְחִי, H6082, and περίψημα, G4370, have both meanings, although their fig. usages are the only ones appearing in the Bible. סְחִי, H6082, is derived from סָחָה, H6081, “to scrape,” and in Lamentations 3:5 is used metaphorically of Jerusalem’s being “scrapings” in the midst of her enemies. Περίψημα comes from a compound meaning “to wipe off all around” and is used in 2 Corinthians 4:13 of the apostles whose low estate is contrasted by Paul with the pride and self-satisfaction of the Corinthian church.
