Mt. of Corruption

CORRUPTION, MT. OF (Heb. הַר־הַמַּשְׁחִית׃֒, “mountain of desecration,” Lat. Mons scandali), the location on the southern height of the ridge known as the Mount of Olives, where Solomon erected an altar for his wives’ pagan gods (1 Kings 11:7); also noted in 2 Kings 23:13, when Josiah destroyed the idolatrous shrine. The rabbinic traditions apply the name Heb. הַר־מרחה, “Mountain of Anointment,” to the place, and the derogatory name may possibly be a twisting of this original phrase.
