ISH-SECHEL ĭsh’ sə kĕl (אִ֣ישׁ שֶׂ֔כֶל). When Ezra found, at Ahava, that he needed ministers for the house of God, he sent to Iddo for some. In Ezra 8:18 it is said: “And by the good hand of our God upon us, they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi.” Where the RSV has “man of discretion” and the KJV “man of understanding,” the ASVmg. has the proper name “Ishsechel,” which may be right, as the context shows that a proper name is required.
