Interpreter

INTERPRETER (מֵלִ֖יץ). This designation may have any one of several shades of meaning: one who translates material from one language to another; one who translates the meaning of a spoken message or reveals the meaning of a dream or something heard; one who represents the will of another (i.e., an ambassador). Though Joseph used an interpreter before revealing his identity to his confused brethren (Gen 42:23), he solved a riddle or interpreted the dreams of others (40:22; 41:13). An interpreter may also be an intermediary between God and man (see Job 33:23; Dan 5:16), an ambassador for God or a spokesman. In NT usage the verb “interpret” refers to the act of explaining the speech of those with the gift of tongues (1 Cor 14:28). It also refers to the expounding of the Scriptures (Luke 24:27) or the translation of foreign languages (Acts 9:36).
