Hawk

HAWK (נֵצ֮, H5891, Lev 11:16; Deut 14:15; Job 39:26, all Eng. VSS; קָאַת, H7684, Isa 34:11 RSV; KJV cormorant, ASV pelican). To the ordinary person, a hawk is any small day-bird of prey. The falconer gives the name to any species he uses, while to the naturalist it means those with short rounded wings, like the Sparrow Hawk (Old World) and the Cooper’s Hawk (North America). Driver regards נֵצ֮, H5891, as placed in between some of the owls and takes it as a general name for small birds of prey, such as Kestrel and Sparrow Hawk. Isaiah 34:11 can be disregarded. Apart from the food lists, the only meaningful reference is Job 39:26, “The hawk soars, and spreads his wings toward the south.” The autumn migration movement is suggested, but this applies equally to many species.
