Frontlets

FRONTLETS (טﯴטָפֹ֖ת). A word occurring in only three OT passages (Exod 13:16; Deut 6:8; 11:18). The expression, “as frontlets between your eyes,” is coupled each time with a similar expression connected with the hand, “as a sign upon your hand.” In the Exodus passage God said that the Feast of Unleavened Bread was to remind the Israelites of their deliverance by Him from Egypt, and was to have the same value as marks upon the hand and the forehead. In Deuteronomy Moses told the Israelites that the law was to have a very important place in their lives. They were to bind it upon the hand and have it as frontlets between the eyes. It appears that the injunction was intended to be taken metaphorically, and not literally, as the later Jews understood it, when they wrote four passages of the law (Exod 13:1-10, 11-16; Deut 6:4-9; 11:13-21) on small bits of parchment, which they enclosed in little boxes, which were worn, bound on the arm and brow, at morning prayer. These “tephillin” were reverenced as highly as the Scriptures. It is usually thought that the phylacteries worn by the Pharisees (Matt 23:5) were the same as the frontlets.
