FIREBRAND (אוּד, H202, perhaps a curved stick used for stirring fires originally). It is used fig. in each of its three occurrences. Isaiah 7:4 describes two angry kings as “smoldering stumps of smoking firebrands” (BDB p. 15). Elsewhere, it refers to the merciful preservation of Jerusalem and Israel, plucked from the fire (Amos 4:11; Zech 3:2). In Judges 15:4 “torch,” לַפִּיד, H4365, is a preferable tr. זִקִּ֗ים “missiles, sparks” are thrown by a madman along with arrows (Prov 26:18). זִיקﯴת׃֙ prob. means “brands, sparks” in Isaiah 50:11.
