Coat of Mail

COAT OF MAIL, is the tr. in the RSV for the Heb. terms שִׁרְיﯴן, H9234, שִּׁרְיָ֔ן (1 Sam 17:5, 38); however in 1 Kings 22:34 RSV the same term is tr. “scale armor”; and in Isaiah 59:17, “breastplate.” The other VSS are similarly confused, KJV in most passages reads “habergeon.” The term is prob. of foreign origin and refers to a leather jacket with small interlaced metal plates sewn on it. Such body armor is depicted on Assyrian reliefs, and fragments have been excavated in the Near E.
