CHIEF. In OT most often, רֹאשׁ֒, H8031, head, e.g. 2 Kings 25:18. ASV, RSV sometimes tr. “heads” (Num 31:26). Also שַׂר, H8569, chieftain (Gen 40:9); נָגִיד, H5592, charismatic (chief) leader (1 Chron 5:2; Jer 20:1); נָשִׂיא֒, H5954, prince (1 Kings 8:1 ASV); פִּנָּה, H7157, corner RSV (n. ASV Judg 20:2 corner; 1 Sam 14:38 fn. ASV). אַצִּיל, H723, side RSV (Isa 41:9); מַעֲלֶה, H5090, ascent (2 Chron 32:33, ASV, RSV). In NT mostly πρῶτος, G4755, first (Matt 20:27 ASV, RSV); twice ἄρχων, G807, ruler (Luke 11:15 ASV, RSV “prince”; 14:1 ASV, RSV “ruler.” Once ἡγουμένους, leading (Acts 15:22, RSV “leading men”).
