CHESIL ke’ səl (כְּסִ֖יל). A town listed among the holdings of the tribe of Judah (Josh 15:30). This section of the Judahite city-list is given as an enclave of the tribe of Simeon within Judah (Josh 19:1-9; 1 Chron 4:28-32). In the former the name appears as Bethul, in the latter as Bethuel. On the basis of the parallelism, the names possibly represent the same place. B gives βαιθηλ in Joshua 15:30. Simons (GTT § 321) identifies it with Khirbetel Qarjetein, five m. N of Tell ’Arād.
