Chapel

CHAPEL (מִקְדָּשׁ, H5219, holy place, sanctuary; chapel, Amos 7:13 KJV). Term used by KJV for Jeroboam’s shrine at Bethel (7:13). Here in the northern kingdom, Amos, a prophet from the southern kingdom, prophesied of Jeroboam’s death and Israel’s exile (7:11). Bethel was both the place of the royal residence and the king’s “sanctuary” (7:13 RSV). At Bethel Jeroboam established his royal cult of golden calf worship which rivaled the Jerusalem Temple (cf. 1 Kings 12:25-33). He appointed in charge Amaziah the priest (Amos 7:10-17).
