CHAMPAIGN shăm pān’. A broad expanse of plain, flat, open country. A word coming from the French and Middle Eng. and used in the KJV as the tr. of עֲרָבָה֮, H6858, (Deut 11:30 RSV Arabah); of בִּקְעָה, H1326, in the margin of Ezekiel 37:2 (KJV, ASV, RSV valley), and of πεδία (Judg 5:1 ASV, RSV plains). The KJV uses “Arabah” as the geographical name of the great depression of the land in which are found the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan, and the Dead Sea (Josh 11:2; 12:3 RSV) and sometimes the Gulf of Aqaba (Deut 2:8).
