Cellar

CELLAR (אﯴצָר, H238, from אָצַר, H732, lay up, store up; κρυπτή, from κρύπτω, G3221, conceal, hide, secret place, Luke 11:33 KJV). The Heb. word is normally rendered treasure, treasury, storehouse. In 1 Chronicles 27:27, 28 it is tr. “cellar” in reference to storage supplies of wine and oil. Excavations at Gibeon have revealed bedrock cellars which undoubtedly provided the best available refrigeration for wine (see Pritchard, BA, XXIII [1960], 28). In Luke 11:33 kryptē refers to a “covered place,” “vault” or “cellar”; thus, the location for the lamp is not in the cellar (kryptē) but on the candlestick.
