Celestial

CELESTIAL (Gr. ἐπουράνιος, G2230), an adjective known in Gr. from Homeric times and meaning “heavenly,” tr. “celestial” (1 Cor 15:40 twice) for the phrase, σώματα επουράνια, “celestial bodies,” in the Hel. concept of the cosmos wherein the sun, moon and stars were hylozooistic beings robed in light. The term is applied to God (Matt 18:35), Christ (1 Cor 15:47, 48), and heaven (Eph 1:20), and heavenly beings (Phil 2:10). It is applied in the ANF to the Christians in the glorified state (1 Cor 15:40).
