Cananaean

CANANAEAN (Καναναῖος, G2831), Simon the. In the list of the apostles (Matt 10:2, 4; Mark 3:16-19) is included “Simon, the Cananaean.” The Lucan lists in Luke 6:14-16 and Acts 1:13 have “Simon, the Zealot.” The term “Cananaean” is a Gr. transliteration of the Aramaic קַנָאַן, meaning “zealot,” “enthusiast.” Thus the identification of this Simon is essentially the same in all four accounts. This surname obviously was given to him because he had been a member of the Zealots, a religio-political party in 1st cent. Pal. Since some late Gr. texts read Κανανίτης, G2832, in Matthew 10:4 and Mark 3:13, the term has been erroneously tr. “Canaanite” in some VSS. Apart from the appearance in the list of the apostles, nothing more of this Simon is recorded in the NT.
