CALVES OF THE LIPS (פָרִ֖ים שְׂפָתֵֽינוּ, MT Hos 14:3b, LXX εκαρπὸ̀ν χεικέων ὑμῶν, Hos 14:2b; cf. Syriac. See also Isa 57:18; Heb 13:15). Translated, MT reads “calves, our lips,” but LXX “fruit of our lips.” Behind LXX “fruit” is Heb. פְּרִי, H7262, which spells much like MT pārîm. Strikingly, both point to same basic meaning, i.e. God wants praise and vows rather than animals. MT indicates that “our lips” are to replace “calves.” LXX stresses praise and vows as “fruit.” Both would be an elaboration of Hosea 6:6, the LXX more clearly than the Heb. text. The NT allusion in Hebrews 13:15 leaves no doubt about the meaning which early Christians attached to the phrase.
