Brook of Egypt

BROOK OF EGYPT, THE (Heb. נַ֣חַל מִצְרַ֗יִם). The word naḥal means, properly, a torrentwadi, a steep-sided stream bed that flows only in the rainy season. The Brook of Egypt is referred to five times in Scripture in full (Num 34:5; 1 Kings 8:65; 2 Kings 24:7; 2 Chron 7:8; Isa 27:12) and twice simply as “the Brook,” נַחֲלָ֖ה (Ezek 47:19; 48:28) as the SW boundary of the Promised Land; and twice (Josh 15:4, 47) as the SW boundary of the tribe of Judah. It is highly probable that it is to be identified with the Wadi el-’Arish, which flows N from deep in the Sinai peninsula to empty into the Mediterranean about half-way between the Suez Canal and Gaza. See Simons, GIT, §70.
