Bracelet

BRACELET (צָמִיד֒, H7543, bracelet; צְעָדָה֒, H7577, armlet). Bracelets of gold, bronze, iron, silver and even glass were part of the manifold adornment of which the Hebrews, in common with all eastern peoples, were fond. The common term for bracelet in the OT is tsāmēd. Abraham’s servant gave Rachel “two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels (Gen 24:22, 30, 47). The same word occurs in the inventory of Numbers 31:50 and in fig. contexts at Ezekiel 16:11; 23:42. The word ĕtsādā found in 2 Sam 1:10 refers to Saul’s arm band prob. worn above the elbow by a fighting man. This may have been part of the royal insignia, and it is said by some that 2 Kings 11:12 contains such a reference. “Testimony” should read “arm band.” Of allied etymology are the words for anklets in Isaiah 3:16, 19, 20 which roused the scorn of the reforming prophet. In Judith 10:4 (KJV) the heroine decks herself with “her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments.” The “chains” were either armlets or anklets.
