Booth

BOOTH (סֻכָּה, H6109, thicket, booth; LXX and NT σκηνή, G5008, tent, booth). A temporary shelter constructed of branches from the olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees, and willows of the brook (Lev 23:40; Neh 8:15) which served to protect from the heat by day and the dew by night. Such shelters were built by Jacob for his cattle (Gen 33:17); by Jonah (Jonah 4:5); by soldiers on the battlefield (2 Sam 11:11; 1 Kings 20:12, 16); and by watchmen in fields at harvest time (Job 27:18; Isa 1:8). Israelites were admonished to make booths for the celebration of the Feast of Booths (Lev 23:39-43). KJV generally tr. sūkkāh by “tabernacles.” Pavilion, clouds, cottage, tents, and shelter also appear.
