Boast

BOAST (הָלַל֮, H2146, be boastful, piel hillēl, praise; καυχάομαι, G3016, vaunt oneself).

Other Heb. and Gr. words bearing this connotation, as well as the related ideas of “glorying, glorifying, praising, blessing,” are אָמַר֒, H606, פָּאַר֮, H6995, בָּרַכְ֮, H1385, יָדָה֮, H3344, δοξάζω, αἰνέω, εὐλογέω, (ἐξ) ομολογέω. The idea of boasting may be used in both a good and bad sense; e.g., kauchaomai appears mainly in Paul, who speaks of boasting or glorying in men, the Lord, the law, self, etc. For the negative emphasis, cf. Psalm 10:3; Romans 2:17; 2 Timothy 3:2. For the positive approach, cf. Psalm 44:8; 2 Corinthians 7:14. One of the sins of the Pharisee was self-righteous boasting (Luke 18:9-14; cf. Isa 42:8; Jer 9:23, 24; 2 Cor 10:12, 17, 18; Eph 2:8, 9).
