Blot

BLOT, Heb. מְאוּם, H4398, has a number of variants, H4583, מוּם, and others. All mean a ritually impure, contaminating blemish or defect (Lev 21:17, et al). However there is a wide divergence between the VS(S), and the RSV tr. “blot” in almost all occurrences. A number of Biblical expressions contain the term (Exod 32:32, Judg 21:17, et al.) and refer to the removal of impious persons and tribes from the rolls of God’s redeemed. The NT uses Gr. έξαλείφω, “to erase, wipe away, remove away,” and it is tr. “blot” in the sense of “blot out” by KJV in Acts 3:19; Colossians 2:14; Revelation 3:5. In the LXX and the patristic documents it is often used to tr. the Heb. terms. The NT meaning is derived from OT usage.
