Blast (blowing)

BLAST (blowing) (נְשָׁמָה, H5972, רוּחַ, H8120). These two words are only rarely rendered “blast.” In both the essential idea is blowing. Only when some violent or destructive influence is indicated does the Eng. Bible in the common VSS render “blast.” The word blast appears in this sense only seven times. 1. The blast of God as expressing His power in providential judgment (2 Sam 22:16; Job 4:9; Ps 18:15 each an instance of נְשָׁמָה, H5972). 2. The blast (רוּחַ, H8120) of “ruthless” men as expressing attempted violence frustrated by God’s power (Isa 25:4). 3. The KJV also renders רוּחַ, H8120, as blast (2 Kings 19:7; Isa 37:7). RSV renders “spirit,” i.e., an inward impulse. 4. The blowing of the signal trumpets (horns) with long drawn-out tones (Heb. בִּמְשֹׁ֣כְ׃׀ בְּקֶ֣רֶן הַיּﯴבֵ֗ל) is rendered “when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn” (Josh 6:5). There is no word in the Heb. text strictly equivalent to the word “blast” in this passage.
