Ben-(prefix)

BEN-(prefix) bĕn (בֵּנ֒, H1201, “son of”; pl. בְּנֵ֥י, “sons of”; LXX ὑιός; Aram. H1337, בַּר֒). The word is used to indicate a wide variety of states and relationships. (1) Sonship. This is by far the most frequent usage. (2) The relationship of children, both male and female to parents (Gen 3:16). (3) The relationship of descendants, however far removed (e.g. “children of Israel”). (4) The state of youthfulness as such (Prov 7:7). (5) Indicating membership in a profession or guild as, for example “son of a prophet” (Amos 7:14). (6) Indicating animal offspring (Job 39:4). (7) Referring to the young of plants or plant shoots (Gen 49:22). (8) Referring to non-living objects, as, for example, “sons of flame” meaning “sparks” (Job 5:7). (9) Indicating some outstanding feature or characteristic of a person, animal or thing as in “sons of wickedness” meaning “wicked men” (2 Sam 3:34). (10) Indicating age as in “son of five hundred years” meaning “five hundred years old” (Gen 5:32).
