Beginning

BEGINNING רֵאשִׁית, H8040; ἀρχή, G794). Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 are the two most important instances of the use of this word in the Bible. Some scholars connect vv. 1 and 3 of Genesis 1, as though the author intended to say, “In the beginning of God’s creating the heavens and the earth, God said,” etc. Grammatically this is possible, but in this case highly improbable. The passage teaches creation out of nothing, a doctrine clearly taught elsewhere in Scripture (Ps 33:6, 9; Amos 4:13; Rom 4:17; Heb 11:3). John 1:1 undoubtedly is intended to teach that the Logos is co-eternal with the Father, although He is distinguishable from Him.
