BASHAN-HAVVOTH-JAIR bā’ shăn hă’ vŏth jā’ ir (הַבָּשָׁנ׃֙ חַוֹּ֣ת יָאִ֔יר, LXX βασάν Ανῶθ Ιαίρ, meaning Bashan the villages of Jair. A group of towns in northern Trans-Jordan.

There was a group of villages in Bashan in Argob taken by Jair, the son of Manasseh (Num 32:41; Deut 3:14). An account of the thirty sons of Jair, a judge who founded the thirty cities is recorded in Judges 10:4; hence the name, “villages of Jair.” Joshua 13:30 records sixty “towns of Jair” while 1 Chronicles 2:22 has twenty-three. Apparently the no. fluctuated with the vicissitudes of war. Only in Deuteronomy 3:14 (KJV) does the longer name Bashan-havoth-jair appear. The word Iauri in the Assyrian records of Adadnirari (1305-1274 b.c.) may refer to this same area.
