BAG, the Eng. word used in KJV to tr. a number of Heb. and Gr. words. The most common is Heb. כִּיס, H3967, “a bag,” “weight bag” (Deut 25:13; Isa 46:6); the Akkad. cognate, kīsu, means a “money bag” and by association is used as a euphemism for “gold” itself. The same semantic usage appears in the OT (Isa 46:6). The Akkad. phrase, “aban kisi” means a crooked or incorrect weight. (Lambert, Babylonian Wisdom Lit. [1960], 132:108). The same phrase appears in Proverbs 16:11 and similar phrases in Micah 6:11; Proverbs 1:14. A less common term is Heb. צְרﯴר֒, H7655, tr. “bag” in Job 14:17; Proverbs 7:20; Haggai 1:6; but in 1 Samuel 25:29 and similar passages it is tr. “bundle.” In Genesis 42:35, the tr. “bundle” is repeated twice where it is obviously incorrect. E. A. Speiser, Genesis (1964) in loc. tr. rightly “money bag.” The difference between this and the preceding Heb. term is impossible to distinguish. In 1 Samuel 17:40, 49 the Heb. כְּלִי, H3998, is tr. “bag,” although the word is common in the OT occurring over 250 times in the text, only here is it so understood. In the passage it is glossed by the phrase, וּבַיַּלְק֖וּט, which appears only here in the OT. It is variously tr. “scrip” (KJV), “wallet” (RSV). The Heb. חָרִיט, H3038, is tr. as “bag” in 2 Kings 5:23; however, in Isaiah 3:22 it is understood as “crisping pins” (KJV), “satchels” (ASV), “girdles” (JPS), “handbags” (RSV). It was more than likely an article of clothing but there is a possible connection with חֶ֫רֶט, H3032, “graving tool” (Exod 32:4; Isa 8:1). It was understood in the rabbinic tradition as “mantle.” In the NT there are two such terms. The KJV reads bag” for the Gr. βαλλάντιον, G964, only in Luke 12:33, where it is distinguished from Gr. πήρα, G4385, “a knapsack.” In the other passages where it occurs, all of which are in Luke, it is tr. as “purse.” In the parallel passage (Matt 10:10), the word ζωνη, “belt,” “money belt” is used. The other term tr. “bag” in the NT is γλωσσόκομον, G1186, found in John 12:6 and 13:29 (KJV) only. The word is used of Judas the betrayer as a mark of his position as apostolic treasurer. It is thought to be derived from the small cases in which the reeds and mouthpieces for woodwind instruments were kept. By extension it was used of money boxes and even of coffins. It is used in the LXX in passages such as 2 Chronicles 24:8 et al. and it is prob. as a tr. of some such Heb. or Aram. word that it appears in John’s gospel.
