Backbite

BACKBITE. The KJV tr. of Heb. רָגַל, H8078, to go about (bearing tales), slander (Ps 15:3), and of Heb. סֵ֫תֶר, H6260, secrecy, in the phrase לְשֹׁ֣ון סָֽתֶר literally tongue of secrecy, i.e. a slanderous tongue (Prov 25:23). Most modern trs. render slander in Psalm 15:3, but several retain backbiting in Proverbs 25:23. It is used also in KJV to tr. καταλαλέω, G2895, to speak against, speak evil of, slander (Rom 1:30; 2 Cor 12:20).
