BABYLONISH GARMENT, BABYLONISH MANTLE (אַדֶּ֣רֶת שִׁנְעָר׃֩). RSV “mantle from Shinar.” One of the articles taken by Achan from the spoils of Jericho (Josh 7:21, 24). Aquila tr. it with στολή, G5124, “long, flowing robe.” Some rabbinical traditions call it a purple robe. An אַדֶּ֣רֶת was worn by the king of Nineveh (Jonah 3:6) as well as by Elijah (1 Kings 19:13, 19; 2 Kings 2:8, 13, 14). Esau, whose body was covered with hair, is compared to a “hairy אַדֶּ֣רֶת שִׁנְעָר׃֩” (Gen 25:25).
