Appetite

APPETITE ăp’ ə tīt (חַיָּה֮, H2652). A word, meaning craving for food, that appears four times in the KJV (Job 38:39; Prov 23:2; Eccl 6:7; Isa 29:8) and four times in the RSV (Job 38:39; Prov 23:2; Eccl 6:7; Isa 56:11). Job 38:39 renders the Heb. word נֶ֫פֶשׁ, H5883, which normally means “life,” but may also mean “appetite,” or “the activity of hunger.” The other three references render נֶ֫פֶשׁ, H5883, which means “life,” “soul,” “desire,” “appetite.” In Isaiah 29:8 the KJV has “his soul is empty,” and the ASV reads “his soul hath appetite,” whereas the RSV has “his hunger not satisfied.” In Isaiah 56:11 the RSV is rendered “the dogs have a mighty appetite,” where the KJV uses the word “appetite” only in the mg. It is clear that appetite has its origin in the essential man—in his very soul and self.
