Animal

ANIMAL. This is found in RSV only and the treatment is much too complicated to justify detailed analysis here. The first twelve occurrences of “animal” in RSV (from Gen 3:14 to Lev 7:24) are tr. as follows in KJV: beast (5 times); cattle (4 times); of the herd (1 time); of the flock (1 time); in the twelfth there is no word in Heb. or KJV. The Heb. words involved are: בְּהֵמָה, H989, (beast, 6 times); חַיָּה֒, H2651, (living creature, 1 time); מִקְנֶה, H5238, (cattle or goods, 1 time); צֹאן, H7366, (sheep, 1 time); נְבֵלָה, H5577, (carcase, 1 time). The NT position is similar. The following Gr. words are tr. “animal”: θηρίον, G2563, (wild beast, 2 times); τετράπους, G5488, (quadruped, 1 time); κτῆνος, G3229, (beast of burden, 1 time); ξῶον (creature, 1 time). Strictly speaking, an animal is any living being endowed with sensation and voluntary movement—in contrast to plants. In popular use it refers primarily to four-footed animals, sometimes only to four-footed mammals, in contrast to man, birds, fish, etc. “Animal” is from the Lat. and was first recorded in 1541, but it did not come into general use until after the publication of KJV, from which it is absent. This problem is discussed further under Beast.
