Ambush

AMBUSH (מַאֲרָב, H4422, an ambush). A military stratagem in which an arrangement of soldiers or other persons in hiding make a surprise attack upon an enemy. This has always been a stratagem of war, and is found in the OT (RSV Josh 8; Judg 20:29ff.; KJV, ASV “liers in wait”) and in the NT (RSV Acts 23:16, 21; 25:3; KJV, ASV “lying in wait,” etc.) It also is used fig. for the wiles of the wicked (Pss 10:8; 59:3; Prov 1:11, 18; 24:15; Jer 9:8).
